ESV  Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
If God is a God of love, why should one be afraid in His presence?  We are very quick to speak about the love of God, and that is as it should be.  However, love is not the only attribute of God.  Some of you may remember a year ago we spoke on the attributes of God.  Among the 14 topics we addressed were holiness, righteousness, omnipotence, wrath, and omniscience.  Each of these attributes has a way of making us feel less than comfortable.   God’s holiness points out my lack of holiness.  God’s righteousness highlights my lack of righteousness.  God’s omniscience and omnipotence leave me no defense in the face of my imperfections.  And God’s wrath leaves me fearful of what might happen.  Hence, Hebrews 10:31 is true!

Introduction: Romans 5:12-21 has had more influence on Christian theology than any other passage in the New Testament.  In my judgment this passage is the most profound and the most central in Christian theology.  A failure to understand this passage is to misunderstand the whole Christian gospel.  Yet, the spiritual depth of this passage is greater than any of us will ever fully grasp in this lifetime.  Before we address the issues related to daily living, we need to understand the doctrinal background of our victory in Christ.  This passage in a nutshell addresses all the grand themes of Scripture: Creation, the Fall, and Redemption.  Today, I want only to deal with verse 12 which is profound it itself.  Three significant doctrines are packed into this verse:
1. The one man; 2. The fall of man; 3. Sin and death.

Introduction:  Today is the first Sunday in Advent.  It is natural that we often begin to think about gifts at this time of year.  We think of gifts to give others and gifts we will receive.  Today as we focus on Romans 5,
I want us to think and appreciate the gifts that God has given to us.  Think of these as God’s Christmas gifts to you because we have been justified by faith in the completed work of Christ for us.  Among those gifts God has given us is peace with Him.  He has also given us access into His presence as well as perseverance in the midst of suffering.  All of this has led to assurance of God’s continued love for us.  What is even more astounding is that these Christmas gifts were given to us when we were weak, when we were sinners, and when we were God’s sworn enemies.  Such acts of love are unheard of in our world today.  We love those who love us, not those who sin against us and are our sworn enemies.  How often do you buy Christmas gifts for your enemies?
